Selected Scriptures about the Fear of God

O that there were such an heart in them, that they would fear me, and keep all my commandments always, that it might be well with them, and with their children for ever!  (Deu 5:29)

That thou mightest fear the LORD thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.  (Deu 6:2)

Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.  (Deu 6:13)

And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.  (Deu 6:24)

And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,  (Deu 10:12)

If thou wilt not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that thou mayest fear this glorious and fearful name, THE LORD THY GOD;  (Deu 28:58)

Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, that it be not moved.  (1Ch 16:30)

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.  (Job 28:28)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.  (Psa 111:10)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding.  (Pro 9:10)

The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.  (Pro 1:7)

Serve the LORD with fear, and rejoice with trembling.  (Psa 2:11)  (Rejoice with trembling?  How fearful is that?)

But as for me, I will come into thy house in the multitude of thy mercy: and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.  (Psa 5:7)

Put them in fear, O LORD: that the nations may know themselves to be but men. Selah.  (Psa 9:20)

The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring forever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.  (Psa 19:9)

The secret of the LORD is with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant.  (Psa 25:14)  (Wanna know the secret?  It's the fear of the Lord.)

Let all the earth fear the LORD: let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of him.  (Psa 33:8)

Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy;  (Psa 33:18)

The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.  (Psa 34:7)

 The transgression of the wicked saith within my heart, that there is no fear of God before his eyes.  (Psa 36:1)

Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear, so is thy wrath.  (Psa 90:11)

O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness: fear before him, all the earth.  (Psa 96:9)

For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.  (Psa 103:11) 

Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him.  (Psa 103:13) 

But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children;  (Psa 103:17)

My flesh trembleth for fear of thee; and I am afraid of thy judgments.  (Psa 119:120)  (This is David, the apple of God's eye.)

He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.  (Psa 145:19)

The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.  (Psa 147:11)  (What can we do to please God?  Fear Him.)

Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.  (Pro 2:5)  (There is a difference between knowing about the fear of God and understanding it.)

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.  (Pro 8:13)

By mercy and truth iniquity is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil.  (Pro 16:6)

The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.  (Pro 19:23)

By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honor, and life.  (Pro 22:4)

Sanctify the LORD of hosts himself; and let him be your fear, and let him be your dread.  (Isa 8:13)  (Did you say "dread"?)

And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD;  And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears:  (Isa 11:2,3)  (Even Jesus feared God)

O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.  (Isa 63:17)

Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts.  (Jer 2:19)  (It is a wicked thing not to fear God.)

Fear ye not me? saith the LORD: will ye not tremble at my presence, which have placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, that it cannot pass it: and though the waves thereof toss themselves, yet can they not prevail; though they roar, yet can they not pass over it?  (Jer 5:22)

And I will give them one heart, and one way, that they may fear me forever, for the good of them, and of their children after them: And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me.  (Jer 32:39, 40)  (the purpose of the New Covenant)

A son honoureth his father, and a servant his master: if then I be a father, where is mine honor? and if I be a master, where is my fear? saith the LORD of hosts unto you, O priests, that despise my name. And ye say, Wherein have we despised thy name?  (Mal 1:6)

And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.  (Mat 10:28)  (Scary enough?)

But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.  (Luke 12:5)

And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.  And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.  (Act 5:11)

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.  (2Co 7:1)  (that's how you perfect holiness.)

Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;  (Eph 6:5)

For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.  (2Ti 1:7)

And so terrible was the sight, that Moses said, I exceedingly fear and quake:)  (Heb 12:21)  (If Moses feared God that much, what about us?)

Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear:  For our God is a consuming fire. (Heb 12:28)  (There's a difference between reverence and fear)

And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear:  (1Pe 1:17)

Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honour the king.  (1Pe 2:17)

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.  (1Jo 4:18) 
In the fear of the LORD is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.  (Pro 14:26)
The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.  (Pro 14:27)

(Obviously, there are two kinds of fear - fear of God and Satanic fear)

These are spots in your feasts of charity, when they feast with you, feeding themselves without fear: clouds they are without water, carried about of winds; trees whose fruit withereth, without fruit, twice dead, plucked up by the roots;  (Jud 1:12)

And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh.  (Jud 1:23)  (like hellfire & brimstone)

Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify thy name? for thou only art holy: for all nations shall come and worship before thee; for thy judgments are made manifest.  (Rev 15:4)

Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.  (Ecc 12:13)  ('Nuff said!)
